Are you wanting a fun change to your coffee table centerpiece but don’t have the budget to make it happen? I am here to show you a fun quick way to do just that! I am always on the hunt at the thrift shop for fun pieces to transform into my style. I instantly spotted this plain boring drawer and knew I could make it into something useful and pretty. All I needed was a few items I already had on hand and some time.
I found this drawer sitting in a pile at the Goodwill Outlet Center or as the regular customers say the bins. We call it that because you walk in and it is nothing but big blue bins filled with stuff to dig through. Everything is priced by weight so this drawer probably cost me like fifty cents if that. I spotted it and instantly thought it would be a cute centerpiece on a coffee table or a fun catch all home base on a counter. The possibilities were endless.
Supplies you will need
- Chalk paint
- Cloth to wipe it off
- Paint brush
- Sandpaper (I used 220 grit)
The Process
I gathered my supplies and got to work. I wiped down the drawer with a cloth to get all the dust and dirt off of it. I had some white chalk paint left over from another project so I went with that. I applied my first coat and let it dry. I didn’t have to sand it because I was using chalk paint. I then painted a second coat and let that dry.
I knew I wanted the distressed look because that goes with my style. To distress a piece is very easy. You just sand the areas where you want it to look worn or distressed. It took maybe five minutes. It was so simple but made such a difference in the finished product. I recommend sanding it outside because it can be messy. I then wiped it down again to get the dust off. Now comes the fun part!
How to create a cute coffee table centerpiece
I pulled out a few items that worked well for Fall since it is September and you may want to start your seasonal decorating. I love to mix colors and textures so I started with a brass candlestick holder, then added in an amber bottle. Amber bottles are great for Fall. Next I put some dried flax in an ironstone mug to add some different colors and textures. I made those cute little cinnamon pumpkins a couple years ago and thought they would look so cute in my crazed ironstone bowl. To add in a little softness I used an old money sack folded up on the bottom. I then added a plant and it all instantly came together. I love how it turned out. This project cost me less than a dollar because I already had the paint and other supplies on hand.
So the next time you are scouring your thrift shop be on the lookout for something that you can transform into your own style. The shape or functionality of it may be good but the style may not. Remember that is easily changed. I would love to know of something you have transformed please comment and share!
