Easy DIY Farmhouse Stool in 3 Steps

I am showing you how to make an easy DIY farmhouse stool in just three steps. You will not believe how cheap this project is!

So I was at the flea market just minding my own business when all of a sudden this cute wood stool catches my attention. I am a sucker for small stools no matter the color or the size. This one was not my favorite color but it had good bones and so I asked the lady how much…holding my breath she says FIVE DOLLARS!!! I said sold and ran as fast as I could. The possibilities are endless for this cute little stool and I am going to show you in three easy steps how I made it even cuter. Let’s get started on this easy DIY farmhouse stool.

Flea market stool before painting

Sand it

I usually use chalk paint but this time I wanted to try a new color and use actual paint. I chose Valspar Canvas Tan. The piece had a little bit of a glossy finish on it and so I hand to sand it to rough it up a little so the paint would go on nice. Can I let you in on a little secret…I HATE to sand things like it gives me a physical reaction. My skin gets goose bumps and my teeth itch I know call me weird. Never the less I sanded it down the best I could with a 220 grit piece of sandpaper.

Sanded the stool.

Paint it

Supplies used were paint and paint brush and sandpaper

I put the first coat on and knew this color would be perfect. I started on the top of the piece and decided to do the bottom last. I let the first coat dry and then came back to do another one. Secret tip or maybe not so secret I put my paintbrush in a plastic baggie and put it into the fridge to stay fresh. This way you don’t have to rinse your brush out if you are going to be reusing it again soon. The top needed a good three coats but I managed two on the rest of it.

Putting the first coat on the stool

Once the piece fully dried I flipped it over and painted the bottom and that took two coats as well. The stool dried pretty fast and I forgot to mention that I used a flat finish incase I wanted to distress it. I decided not to distress it for now but I may change my mind depending on how I use it and my mood.

Style It

This is the fun part to me. I had visions of it being a cute little foot stool to a chair. I tried it in my living room and it looked cute and then I tried it in my dining room with my vintage rocking chair and of course it looked cute there too. It would also be cute propping a cupboard door open and showcasing all your pretty collections. I love to stack stools too so it would look pretty that way too. It could be a centerpiece or used as an actual step stool in a kitchen. I told you the possibilities are endless. That is why when the lady said five dollars I took that deal and walked away smiling.

Finished stool

Just remember you can always tailor the piece you find to fit your style. This stool would fit into a farmhouse style, a cottage style or even a modern style. I also found a few other pieces that I can’t wait to transform. It is like buying a fixer upper its a great price and has great bones. You know you can transform it into something beautiful.
