How to Make a Wood Spoon Rack

Who doesn’t love a good wood spoon collection, especially if they are in a beautiful display. I have always wanted a primitive wood spoon rack but it wasn’t always in the budget. So what do you do when that happens…you DIY one of course! I found a cool wood cutting board at my local thrift shop and knew that it would work as a wood spoon rack.

I am going to show you exactly how to make a wood spoon rack using a cutting board in just a few easy steps. It literally only takes about 40 minutes total. It was impressive how easy it actually is. Let’s get started.

Tools You Will Need for Your Wood Spoon Rack

  • Measuring Tape
  • Hand Saw
  • Screws
  • Drill and Drill bits

Step One for your Wood Spoon Rack

measuring a cut line on the cutting board

First measure exactly where you want to make the cut. I decided to go down 5 inches. It looked better at this length in my opinion. This will depend on the size of your cutting board or piece of wood. It is a good idea to draw a cut line with a pencil as a guide.

Step Two

Cut the board where the line is with a hand saw. Be sure that the piece will look the way you want when attached. Measure where you want the holes on the back and check that they are equal on both sides. Then predrill two holes on the back through both boards like they are being attached so it will make it easier for the screws to go in.

Step Three

Once you drill the holes you can hold the boards and screw them together. Then make sure it looks even and correct. I could already see how cute it was coming together. The next step would be to determine how many spoon holes you want and how far apart they will be. This is a personal preference depending on the size of the wood piece you are working with.

Step Four

I determined that two holes in a row would look good with having a total of six holes. Meaning for me I wanted three rows of two holes. The holes were about an inch and a quarter apart. You may want a different amount depending on the size of your wood piece. Then it might be a good idea to hold the spoons up to see what looks best to you. Next test out which of your biggest drill bits will work. He ended up using the biggest one and it matched perfectly. Finally drill each of the holes. Keep in mind you can sand the holes if you wish but I did not because they were covered up with my spoons.

Finished Product

I checked out the first hole with my spoon and it was perfect! The finished product was just what I had been wanting. Then I immediately added all my spoons and hung it up on the side of my old Hoosier cabinet.

I was lucky to find a cutting board that already had a hole at the top so I didn’t have to add anything to it to be able to hang it. I think that is why a cutting board would be great to use, most have a hole at the top of the handle anyway! You can stain it or paint it but I loved the aged look already so I kept mine natural. I would love to know if you try this easy DIY project so please leave me a comment if you do!

I love it. It will be a great add to my kitchen to hold all my wooden spoons that I use when canning. It will accommodate their long handles nicely. Now to find a cutting board or just the right piece of wood. I will likely be hanging it on my wall. Happy crafting.
