How to make a Farmhouse Cloche

Cloches are so fun to use around your home. They are a great way to display items in an unexpected way. I thought it would be a great idea to show you a couple of ways on how to make a farmhouse cloche. I am then going to style them in a few different ways so that you can see how versatile they are. One way may involve a thrift find that I transformed into my style.

DIY Cloche Base

I was scouring my local thrift shop for my weekly Instagram series I do called thrift with us Thursday. I go thrifting with a twenty dollar budget and show you what you can truly find for such great deals. I spotted this piece and instantly knew it would make a great cloche base. I didn’t like the color but it had the style I loved and knew I could transform it easily with some paint. I love to look for architectural pieces that you can use in many ways. I paid six dollars and ninety nine cents for the piece. I knew that I had a glass cloche top at home and that it would fit perfectly. Let me show you what I did.

Supplies

  • paint
  • paint brush
  • sandpaper if you want to distress it

I had white chalk paint left so that is what I used. I also knew white was the perfect neutral color for this piece. I painted a coat on and let it dry. I came back and added another coat then let that dry. I turned it over and painted the bottom the same way. I decided not to distress it but I love that look so I may go back and do that. I just love how it turned out!

DIY Farmhouse Cloche Using a Vintage Column Base

My absolute favorite cloche is the one I pieced together with fun vintage finds. I get asked about this cloche every time I post it. I always try to look for vintage architectural pieces like an old chippy column base to use as the bottom of the cloche. I lucked into a few at my local antique shop a while back. I sold most of them but I decided to keep this one which I knew I could use for a cloche. I was on the hunt for a cool top piece. I happened to be at my favorite vintage market in March called Vintage Pickin and found the wire top. Instantly my heart pitter pattered because I knew it would work.

It is a match made in chippy cloche heaven and I love styling it each season. I keep it on my coffee table as the main centerpiece. I just found another column base which is a little different and hope to make that my next project! It needs a little cleaning and some TLC to make it ready to use.

Ways to style a Farmhouse Cloche

I love changing things out seasonally for instance look how I added my amber bottles and dried flax for a fall vibe. I also added a fun gourd and pumpkins to make a cute centerpiece vignette. You can also add a plant to the base without putting the glass top on. A few pillar candles grouped together would also look pretty and so simple. The possibilities are endless! I would love to know if you love cloches as much as I do!

  2. I love the idea of turning these upside down. I have several that I still use in my vignettes, never thought about upside down as a cloche base. Thanks for the great idea!
