One of my favorite places to decorate for Fall is my porch. It is the one space that literally everyone sees first. I decorate my porch like I decorate inside my home to give everyone a sense of what to expect when they walk inside. I love that I finally have a decent space to decorate at this house compared to my past homes. This year especially I had to create a cute Fall porch on a budget.
I knew I had to stick to a pretty tight budget when deciding how I wanted to decorate. A porch full of mums and pumpkins are beautiful, but that can tend to get pretty expensive. Pricing out which places had the best deal on pumpkins and mums, I bought the amount that fit into my budget. In the end, I found two big orange pumpkins that just speak traditional primitive style to me. Heirloom pumpkins are so pretty but they are a lot more money, at least here where I live. Four small mums from Walmart ended up at around twenty dollars. This was the cheapest price I could find. The cornstalks were the most expensive item but I keep them up until Christmas so I could justify it. Now let’s take a little tour of how I incorporated everything.
Adding in Some Vintage to my Fall Porch Decor
I have been blessed to have amassed a great collection of vintage items to choose from. This took time just so you know I have been collecting for years, but remember you can find some great vintage pieces at the thrift stores! Using layers just like I would decorate a room inside my home, I focused on what I wanted to add in. My mainstays are always my rocking chairs, church pew, tables, and screen door behind the church pew.
I just looked at what I did have and what made my porch look welcoming and cozy. Pillows and grain sacks were the perfect touch to add to the chairs and pew. Let’s chat about containers for my mums. I always look for that unexpected vintage piece for that. Bushel baskets, old chippy buckets, enamelware, and of course a chippy white concrete planter fit the bill. These items I already had in my garage just waiting to be used. The watering can and birdhouse isn’t just for Spring and Summer. I keep them out through the Fall.
Finishing Touches
I created a simple farmhouse vignette with a birdhouse and bucket full of mums. Simple country touches. The basket and watering can just looked perfect together especially with the pop of red from the mums. Then I added in some dried bittersweet to the old crock on my step to add a touch of Fall. I placed the pumpkins on my front steps and added in the cornstalks to my porch columns to finish the look. Don’t you think sometimes less is more especially when your look is simple old farmhouse. These items would have been found on any old homestead back in the day.
I hope I have encouraged you to go out to your porch no matter the size and think of it as an extension of your home while decorating. Have fun and add in those vintage layers to make it welcoming and cozy. You can have a cute Fall porch on a small budget. You don’t have to spend a huge amount on pumpkins and mums to make it look like Fall. I am joining in on a fun Fall blog hop and you will love all the other blogs linked below.
