I love any handmade Christmas decor item and I am going to show you how to make a simple old fashioned Christmas garland in just a few steps.
Old Fashioned Christmas ideas like using what nature gives you or what you may have on hand to make something special is my favorite. I had seen these and other similar garlands floating around Pinterest in all the old primitive style Christmas homes and I really wanted to give it a try. So I gathered the supplies that I thought I wanted to use and it all came together just how I imagined. Let me show you how to make a simple old fashioned Christmas garland.
Gather your supplies
I knew I wanted to use my orange slices that I had dried plus cinnamon sticks and bay leaves. The garland I wanted was not your typical horizontal style but I wanted it to be vertical and smaller in size. I had jute twine already on hand and of course scissors. That is it! I will list everything I used below.
- jute twine
- dried orange slices
- bay leaves
- cinnamon sticks
- scissors
Figure out your pattern if you want one
I honestly did not really have a pattern in mind until I started the garland. It all just kind of came together and ended up in a pattern. I started with a cinnamon stick to anchor the piece. Then I added in two bay leaves and then a dried orange. Next I added two more bay leaves and then another orange slice. Finally I added two more bay leaves and a cinnamon stick. Then I repeated the pattern until I was running out of the items. I also knew I wanted to end with a cinnamon stick. I tied the twine around the cinnamon stick just in case you were wondering. For the bay leaves I just poked a hole through them with the scissors. So here is my pattern again listed below.
- cinnamon stick
- two bay leaves
- orange slice
- two bay leaves
- orange slice
- two bay leaves
- cinnamon stick and so on.
Decide the size and placement of the garland
Like I said before I knew I wanted it to be vertical so I made it smaller and I wanted it to look handmade and old fashioned. I worked until I ran out of bay leaves and cinnamon sticks. The Hoosier was the perfect location to display the garland since it speaks of old fashioned kitchen deocr. I love how it turned out so much that I think I will leave it up all winter.
You can easily tailor this garland to your style and use other dried fruits like apples or lemons. You could add in cranberries or whole dried oranges. The garland can also be made horizontal with more items. The possibilities are endless really. Just have fun and enjoy the process to me that was the fun part letting my creativity flow. I would love to know if you make a garland for your winter decor.
